Give a little

Give Go on… give a little.

I promise you — if you give generously, without asking what’s in it for me — you won’t believe the rewards that come your way.

Lewis Green of bizsolutionsplus shares his thoughts about giving back…and has some interesting research statistics on how being selfless might pay off for your business.

Want some recent examples of how good giving back looks?

Gavin Heaton’s Servant of ChaosHe’s approaching his 500th blog link and in true Gavin fashion, he’s made it about giving.  If you’ve never linked to him before and you introduce your readers to his thinking (a good idea anyway) and make a comment on his blog you might be the lucky 500th blog!  If so, you’ll get to a guest post on Gavin’s blog and have the chance to introduce yourself to his many readers.

CK of the infamous CK’s Blog is on round two of her incredibly successful book club via Marketing Profs.  The book this time is Al & Laura Reis’ The Origin of Brands.  Whether you have read the book or not, jump into the lively discussions.  What’s amazing about this is that everyone is giving.  CK moderates and orchestrates the whole thing.  The authors participate in the discussions and share their insights (when was the last time you got to brand banter with two best selling authors?) and Marketing Profs makes it all possible.

So what do you say…what could you give?

  1. So true, Drew, it’s all about giving. Gavin’s a great blogger – I love his blog and I’m going to check this out. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Nancy,

I believe being able to give comes from a place of gratitude. When you are genuinely grateful, giving seems natural and easy.

And in the end, you reap the benefits of that as well. Which I suppose makes being good selfish, in an odd sort of way!

  3. Robyn,

Agreed completely. I think Gavin’s voice is one of the most interesting of the blogosphere.

And one of the most generous. It feels good to give him back a little.

You’re too kind Drew. Thanks so much. The book club has given me so much — new colleagues and friends the world over, so many new marketing lessons, a way to connect with top authors and, best of all, a way to wonk out on marketing with you good people.

And Gavin is a model of giving. In fact at the blogger party last night in NYC (you were missed!), I was singing both your and Gavin’s praises. Amazing how generous you two are consistently.

I so appreciate all you do, thanks again ;-).

Thanks for all the kinds words, Drew, Robyn and CK! I think one of the reasons that we are all able to consistently push this “community of ideas” is to do with the open and energetic sharing of concepts and the active support and participation of a variety of viewpoints and voices.

As CK’s Book Club shows, the more that participate the greater and richer the discussion. That what I love about blogging and bloggers in general. It’s great to be part of this growing group!

  6. Fran says:

I agree. Rewards come when you least expect it. When I give something, I try not to think about the rewards. It only makes you worry about that thing. Instead, forget about it and continue. Not all good things that we do has a reward.

  7. CK,

You make sucha great point — you just listed all the value you get back from the Book Club. The generosity comes from doing it from the heart, benefits or not…and that you’re glad to share the benefits with everyone.

You reap what you sow…so no wonder your life is filled with much goodness. It’s what you give.

    Drew

  8. Gavin,

Very true — we’re greater together. But every group has some leaders who set the stage.

Your naturally generous spirit sets the example and makes it easier for others to follow.

And as I said to CK — the bounty for doing that is ultimately yours. And ours.

    How cool is that?

    Drew

  9. Fran,

I think often times, the reward is not a direct one. It’s more of a “something good” will happen directly or indirectly.

But I think you’re spirit is the right one — give to give.

    Everything else is just gravy.

    Drew
