When you are absolute in the treatment of your logo so that it becomes embedded in the minds of your consumers — then you earn the freedom to have some fun.
The best part — modifying your logo like this actually reinforces your brand.
So….how consistent are you with your logo? Have you earned this reward?

I don’t like it Drew. I think they went overboard and it clashes with their original design.
Dan,
It seems they are changing it every day. Today’s is actually beautiful.
But the point is — because they are SO consistent — they have the freedom to not be on occasion. It actually reinforces their brand when they play with it a little bit.
No worries…I am sure it will be back to plain old Google tomorrow!

When a company has been branded I think a logo can be altered like this. But if a company has not crossed that threshold it could reflect negatively with their customers.
I think Google could do anything with their logo, much like apple, and it would not hurt them.
Fred,
No argument here. You have to earn the right to mess with your logo. Most companies do it way before their audience is ready for it.
